On My Design Wall (Floor)

It's Monday morning and I'm still having problems with my quilt.

I started out with 2 separate tops and layered the dark one on the left on top of the lighter one on the right.

Then I made circles and cut out the top fabric inside of the circles to expose the lighter bottom fabric.

Next I added a gold satin stitch around the circles.

Then I started adding the stitched thread to make the ribbon. You can see how it is puckering and shrinking on the right side of the picture.

I decided to go ahead and finish the ribbon and went over it a second time with a slightly darker thread on the "big" edge. This caused more and more distortion.

So I decided to cut out the ribbon ... and now I need to decide what to do!

Have just found you by way of Google - which initially led me to Polly the Patchworker when I keyed in "Farmer's Delight" quilt block pattern. I will be giving a program to our Liberty Ladies Quilt History Study group focusing on this particular quilt block. I grew up in Virginia with roots in West Virginia and while researching the pattern in my quilt history books from both of these states, I discovered that the Farmer's Delight block at one time was unique to the area west of the Shenandoah Valley and into West Virginia. I really enjoyed seeing your family's completed quilts in this pattern - all the generations doing the same block but interpreting it in your own lovely way. Your red and white version is so striking!
If I can find out whether the quilt shop where we meet has wi-fi, would you mind if I took my laptop along for the program and showed the other quilters your blog site? I know they would really enjoy seeing all the different Farmer's Delight quilts.

In the meantime, hope you can find a solution to your ribbon dilemma...all the layers are no doubt fighting each other. Could you do reverse applique for the circles and cut away any excess fabric? Your quilting looks far more advanced than mine so I probably am not understanding what process you are using.

@Pat Taylor - Hi Pat. How special that you too have found the Farmer's Delight block something to crow about. I would be glad for you to use my blog and pictures for your lecture or talk. I would count it an honor and I'm glad you enjoy it.  And I too would like to be a mouse in the room when you give your talk. What fun! ... You may also want to visit my real blog, http://juliagraber.blogspot.com . I'm trying to switch from Xanga to Blogspot.

Thank you Julia! And thank you for visiting my own blog. I switched a year ago from WordPress to Blogger and find it very user friendly - most of the time! They occasionally have odd little glitches which can take a little while to correct, but over all I have been happy with Blogger.

Happy Stitching!

Yikes, Julia! How brave to cut away your ribbon, but now you might have more problem than you wanted. Libby Lehman uses a stabilizer under her ribbon quilting, and I hope you did, too. Good luck, and let us know how you work this out!
