Germany
We continued our boat ride up the Rhine River to St. Goar where we got a train back down to Rudesheimer.
Javonne, my niece, was our tour guide.
Then we took a ferry to Bingen
and drove back up river to Bacharach.
We wound our way through the town until we came to the narrow road leading us up the hollow to Steeg.
There we found the Huthwol (Heatwole) house from which our ancesters came.
Abover the doorway is the date 1905 and J. Hutwohl.
On the way back down the hill we saw this wonderful setting with a bench. We tried it out and when we leaned back the slats on the back kept on going backwards throwing our feet up in the air. The bench was in dire need of repair.
We also visited the graveyard where some of our ancesters lie dormant until the resurrection.
We drove back down the narrow streets and browsed at some shop windows. The stores were closed so I guess my souviners will be snapshots of what I’d have liked to buy. This shop had drawings of some of the notable buildings around town.
And this shop had carvings for sale.
We ate supper at this restraunt. The pork, German fried potatoes and apple strudle were delicious.
And then it was time to board the ferry and go back to Javonne’s apartment.

Wow! These pictures brought back wonderful memories of several years ago. Just happening upon Steeg was a moment of serendipity in my life. I get the warm fuzzies when I think about it.
We had Heatwole’s in the area where I grew up — one family in the church I grew up in and his brother in the parent church of ours in the Shenandoah Valley, Virginia. Don’t hear the name too often.
Julia I didn’t realize that Javonne was only a days ride to some of the Heatwole sites. I sure hope it will work out for her to take Holly there. I know they will be on a time restraint and I’m sure Javonne has her work schedule to contend with.
I had to laugh at you and Paul on that bench thinking about you leaning back and your legs flying up in the air. To bad Javonne didn’t capture that on film (memory stick).
Julia, I love seeing your photos. I really hope it works out for me to go see Javonne. I think seeing the home of one of our ancestors would be great, and even greater would be to meet some of our Hutwohl cousins.
Oh Julia, what a wonderful trip. Makes me want to go again. It’s great to have a personal tour guide.I’ve done the Rhine River Cruise. thanks for posting
I’m glad y’all got to work this special part of the trip into your schedules. Javan was probably delighted to see familiar faces and be your tour guide. I’d have loved to been nearby when you tried out that rickety bench.
